Warm weather for a few days followed by mid-week rain

Later today, the clouds will increase as a system approaches from the west.

Mainly clear and cold. Overnight lows this weekend will be dropping to the single digits - even some subzero temperatures! High temperatures will climb into the lower 70s again.

Sunday we will finally see some cooler air moving in.

Last-minute shoppers may want to get those stocking stuffers before Saturday or plan to bundle up as the high is expected to top out at 6 degrees.

If you are hoping for a white Christmas, it looks unlikely to happen here in Southwest Louisiana. Basically, it will be a cold, dry Christmas. A weak cold front will drop southeast across Pennsylvania and New Jersey tonight, although you'll hardly be able to notice other than a shift in the wind.

"It is definitely going to be the coldest air of the season", said Dean Packingham, senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Duluth.

There will be bright or short sunny spells over Ulster and north Connacht on Wednesday, with highest temperatures there of 7 to 9 degrees. Temperatures will rise into the lower 50s but then fall into the mid-40s by noon. While that's certainly cooler than the mid to upper 50s we enjoyed today, it's not almost as cold as the stuff we shivered to most of last week. The rain chances should begin to diminish as we head into Wednesday evening.

Clouds and light rain will pass by from time to time through early tonight. The chance for a wintry mix of rain and snow is possible for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with highs in the 30s.

As well as today's forecast, a preliminary Christmas forecast was released.

By Tuesday, the front is expected to be north of the area.

We are still watching the models closely for the weekend and into Christmas. A strong cold front will bring sharply colder air to the region beginning Thursday night and through the day Friday. Of course, those are the two most important days for holiday travel, so pay attention to future forecasts as the weather picture hopefully comes into better focus.
