Kirstjen Nielsen sworn in as DHS secretary

The Senate voted 62 to 37 on December 5 to confirm Kirstjen Nielsen (shown) as the next secretary of Homeland Security.

Nielsen's nomination was also held up for a week in the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee after members sent her more than 200 requests for follow-up information.

Nielsen served at DHS as chief of staff under former head John Kelly in the early days of the Trump administration. Some in Congress still have their doubt about the politics behind the move and whether she has what it takes to lead DHS.

By confirming Ms. Nielsen's nomination to lead DHS, the Senate will take a serious step to strengthen our nation's security.

Throughout her confirmation process, Ms. Nielsen failed to demonstrate that she would provide the steady experienced leadership - free from political interference from the White House - that the department needs.

Nielsen will be the first cyber professional to head the agency charged with protecting federal civilian networks, leading efforts to coordinate cybersecurity of privately owned critical infrastructure.

Democrats complained that Nielsen lacks the experience needed to run a major agency with 240,000 employees.

Nielsen previously served on George W. Bush's homeland security council.

During the hearing, observed a report in the New York Times, Nielsen responded to Senator Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) who accused Nielsen of refusing to say that humans are the primary cause of the rise in global temperatures.
