Governor to call election to fill Conyers' seat

Posted December 06, 2017

Veteran US Democrat John Conyers announced Tuesday he is leaving the House of Representatives after more than five decades in office, following a series of sexual harassment accusations by former staffers.

Reed said Tuesday that Conyers likely will call the radio show because his client shouldn't "risk his health" by traveling outside in the cold weather.

"I have a great family here and especially in my oldest boy, John Conyers III who incidentally I endorsed to replace me in my seat in Congress".

A Conyers lawyer, Arnold Reed, said the departure was effective immediately. A lawyer for Conyers has repeatedly said the congressman denied wrongdoing and had no plans to resign, despite more calls from members of his own party. Grubbs is the cousin of another accuser, Marion Brown, who previously broke a confidentiality agreement to speak publicly.

Elisa Grubbs made the allegation in an affidavit released late Monday by her attorney, Lisa Bloom.

"There can be no tolerance for behavior that subjects women to the kind of conduct that has been alleged", said Jerrold Nadler, who replaced Conyers in his leadership role on the House Judiciary Committee.

"My legacy can't be compromised or diminished in any way by what we're going through now".

The reports cite conversations with Conyers' grandson, Ian Conyers. Conyers, 88, was hospitalized last week for a stress-related illness after returning home from Washington, D.C. And a former scheduler complained of sexual harassment and retaliation.

Rep. John Conyers' attorney is expected to make an announcement later this morning.

'It's very sad. The courageous women who came forward are owed justice, ' Pelosi continued at a Capitol press conference. When sexual-misconduct allegations surface in the private sector, a boss really can say "You're fired" - as Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose and others can attest.

"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all the citizens in the country what federal legislatures are doing or not doing - and any cost that may have incurred as a result of that", Conyers said. She said he asked her to read his statement announcing his decision and that he's notified House Speaker Paul Ryan, Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder of his plans to step down.

But Conyers, who took his MI seat in 1965 and was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, insisted that his record would not be tarnished by the accusations. Conyers has denied all the allegations, and on Tuesday, wrote the accusations off as "politics".

Conyers was first elected to the House in 1964.

BuzzFeed was the first news outlet to report last week about a settlement Conyers made with a former staffer who had accused him of sexual misconduct.
