While most of us know Sabrina the Teenage Witch best from her long-running live action sitcom, in which she was played by Melissa Joan Hart, the character originated in Archie comics. The show is being developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the showrunner on the dark "Riverdale" series also based on Archie Comics' characters. TV, with Aguirre-Sacasa, who penned the Riverdale pilot, and Lee Toland Krieger, who directed it, reprising their roles on the Sabrina pilot episode. Netflix has scooped up the Sabrina reboot based on Archie Comics graphic novel The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Hollywood Reporter reported on Friday.

Ever since Riverdale reimagined the Archie comics as a dark, sexy Twin Peaks-esque teen drama, there's been a growing desire to bring original Archie Comics character Sabrina the Teenage Witch into the mix.

The show was initially put into development at The CW in September. Netflix's interest in Sabrina is not surprising. Perhaps streaming results from Riverdale appearing on Netflix enticed the streaming giant to make a move in acquiring Sabrina for themselves.

Apparently, Netflix wants to move fast on the series saying that the seasons would shoot back-to-back with the first filming from February to June and the second June to October.

Expanding the Archie Comics universe may ultimately prove harder for The CW than for Netflix, even though Warner Bros.

In the introduction to Chilling Adventures' original collected edition, Aguirre-Sacasa said this of the comics' tone: "If Afterlife with Archie was about Lovecraft and zombies and body horror, Sabrina would be more psychological, a bit more subtle (but only a bit), a bit more sexual (as stories about witches often are)".

No firm date has been given for the show's premiere, but it is expected to drop sometime in 2018. No word on if that plan has changed now that the show has jumped from The CW to Netflix. If Sabrina follows its source material, fans should expect something spooky and dark, a departure from the classic Sabrina The Teenage Witch TV series from the '90s.
