11 killed in Georgia hotel fire

"The fire has now been extinguished", the regional interior ministry said in a statement.

TBILISI, DFWatch-11 people are confirmed dead, and an unknown number injured in a massive fire Friday night at a five-star hotel in Batumi which is hosting the Miss Georgia contest.

Leogrand Hotel is now hosting this year's Miss Georgia contest, but organizers said none of the contestants were injured in fire.

The cause of the blaze, which took hours to extinguish, is not clear. There was no fire escape, for example.

Georgia's Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili announced the government is mourning the tragedy alongside other citizens. 47 Israelis were staying at the hotel at the time of the deadly fire, one of whom was slightly injured from smoke inhalation. At least 100 other guests and employees also escaped.

Batumi, which is the capital of the autonomous republic of Adjaria and the second largest city in Georgia, is located only 17 kilometers away from the border with Turkey.
