Without Pedroia, utilityman Brock Holt would be the sensible in-house fill-in next year. Pedroia will always be a legendary second baseman that helped Boston win two World Series championships, but it's looking more likely that he's nearing the end of an incredible era in Red Sox history.

On Wednesday, Pedroia had cartilage restoration surgery and according to Tim Britton of the Providence Journal, he's going to be out a while.

Pedroia has four years and $56 million left on his current contract with the Red Sox. He played in just 105 games while hitting.293 with 7 home runs in 2017.
