Apple's iPhone 8 Production Reportedly Cut In Half

The chief executive of Canada's largest mobile network Rogers Communication said appetite for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus had been "anemic", adding to a series of hints that sales had been poor ahead of the iPhone X launch on November 3.

Pegatron, a contract assembler, fell as much as 2.6% in early Taipei trade while Catcher Technology slipped as much as 3.6%.

In fact, the iPhone X is arguably the iPhone 8's largest rival, as while Android handsets are often technically superior in hardware terms than iPhones, Apple's iOS has a very dedicated following, which is why previous iPhone models have sold well despite the lack of QHD displays and cutting-edge design.

One week prior to iPhone X pre-orders, a new report citing sources within Apple's supply chain claim that yield rates for some iPhone X components have improved and become stable enough to predict that Apple will be able to handle 2017's iPhone X demand.

As a result, shares in the US Company dropped 2.4% overnight after it was revealed that the Company had cut 50% of their component requirements for the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. "Apple's lower iPhone 8 pricing should limit the impact, but it remains a risk".

Shipments of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in November and December are expected to be slashed from 10 million to 12 million to five million to six million units per month.

It also pointed to KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst John Vinh, who reported earlier this week that a carrier store survey suggested the iPhone 7 was still outselling the iPhone 8. The reports do not specify details of the production cuts nor the source of the information. I expect the baseline iPhone 8 to get a price cut to $599 next year and the baseline iPhone 8 Plus to be cut to $699 once the 2018 iPhones are released.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are arguably far less exciting than the iPhone X.

Apple and GE are making Predix available for iPad and iPhone via a new SDK for iOS, meaning developers have the tools to create Industrial Internet of Things apps on the Apple platform.
