ZTE Axon M announced: A dual screen 'foldable' Android phone

Posted October 19, 2017

Spec-wise, the ZTE Axon M is a bit of an odd duck. What you get are two 5.2-inch FullHD (1080p) LCD displays, and it's easier to think of it in the way the Nintendo DS portable works with two screens.

"The Axon M creates an entirely new foldable smartphone category, one that ZTE is committed to invest and lead the way in", said Lixin Cheng, CEO of ZTE Mobile Devices. The Mirror mode basically shows the same content on two screens, while the Dual mode allows you to open two apps for better multitasking. But here's the kicker: there's a hinge that connects the two screens, meaning they can be flipped and joined side-by-side, essentially making it a foldable tablet of sorts. Both can be combined into an Extended Mode that offers up a tablet-like 6.75-inch display for watching movies or playing games.

The new phone, available on AT&T, has four modes so users can choose what to display on each screen. Keep in mind the new Google Pixel 2 with its single 5-inch screen is 7.8mm thick and weighs 143 grams. "Dual Mode" is basically split screen, with each app taking up a 1920x1080 screen. You can also watch two different videos on each screen and toggle the sound between them on the fly. These screens not only make the display bigger but also provide a next generation interactive interface.

Under the hood, the smartphone is driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor that is clubbed with 4GB of RAM.

Samsung CEO steps down
The company forecast bumper quarterly earnings on Friday, putting it on track to post a record operating profit for the period. Samsung is also trying to fix its relationship with the public after the embarrassing fire-prone Note 7 fiasco.

Foldable phones like Axon M and Samsung's much anticipated Galaxy X which is reported to come to the market with a foldable display in 2018, will again kick-start a period of innovation that was that was last seen only in 2007 when the first iPhone changed our lives forever. AT&T has the exclusive in the United States from next month and will charge Dollars 24.17 per month on a 30-month contract with an eligible service plan. It comes with 64GB onboard storage, expandable up to 2TB via a microSD card. The hinge only goes 180 degrees, so you can't "close" the smartphone such that both screens are protected. The phone will soon launch in China, Europe, and Japan in coming months.

Axon M packs in a 3,180 mAh battery which supports Quick Charge 3.0 for fast charging. Other goodies on-board include dual speakers, a dedicated Hi-Fi audio chip, a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as a USB Type-C port.
