Yesterday's premiere of Star Trek: Discovery has been a pretty big success for its subscription-based streaming service network CBS All Access, a network choice that didn't seem too positive for fans and critics.
FOX | Who Shot Biggie & Tupac? did 2.8 mil and a 1.1. The CBS All Access service can be watched on multiple platforms including Apple and Android mobile devices, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Giving a third of the first two episodes over to Klingon characters who speak their (subtitled) dialogue in a slow, tortured cadence while standing very still in a large meeting chamber just takes the wind out of Discovery's sails; their plan's not terribly complicated, and the amount of time they spend yelling about it just feels like padding. Burnham is First Officer on the Shenzhou and is a human who had a Vulcan upbringing, thanks to the Vulcan Sarek. On the other, it makes ideal sense to talk about them together: I can't think of another time when a new TV show has launched and, after less than an hour, asked viewers to pay for a streaming service they probably don't want in order to continue.
In the 11 years since Trek was last on TV, there have been far superior sci-fi shows - I'm thinking of SyFy's The Expanse, in particular - and a trilogy of excellent Star Trek films, that the show was always going to be compared to.

"I completely respect their desire to re-imagine the Klingons - we're so much better at makeup effects today than we were 50 years ago - but I have to say, I thought that the actors were kind of buried in the heavy prosthetics".
Star Trek has returned to television more than a decade after the conclusion of Star Trek Enterprise, the last major outing on the small screen for Gene Roddenberry's iconic science fiction series.
Sucked unceremoniously into the vacuum of space by a hull breach, Connors is the latest in a long tradition of Star Trek deaths.
The series does receive a welcome infusion with the arrival of Jason Isaacs as Captain Lorca in a subsequent episode, but by then it's hard to escape the nagging sense that this is Star Trek Lite. I'm also willing to bet that his show would have been less busy and more focused on Burnham, because everything else he's ever created - Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, the brilliant Hannibal - has been character-driven with a distinct perspective. It moves fast and the story is gripping, and the visuals easily eclipse anything done by Star Trek on TV before. It was interesting that the first officer was the adventurous one after Captain Kirk (the William Shatner version) paved the way for that. If you want to get into the swing of things properly and understand what Discovery might be like if you were watching on the Klingon homeworld of Klinzhai, Netflix has enabled a little Easter Egg for its Aussie audience: subtitles for the entire series in Klingon.
