Equifax Says Site Vulnerability Behind Massive Breach; FTC Confirms Investigation

The FTC wants to know how hackers were able to access the Social Security numbers and other information of 143 million Americans.

"When a data breach occurs, our primary concern is protecting Georgia consumers who may have been impacted", said Attorney General Chris Carr.

Equifax is offering a free check up on its website to see if your personal information has been compromised.

In addition, Carr said one of the first steps Georgians should take is freezing their credit, which essentially locks down a person's credit to prevent thieves from opening credit lines.

Experts also recommend that you regularly monitor your other financial accounts including credit cards, checking accounts, savings accounts and any others.

I'm not a big fan of credit freezes.

There are literally hundreds of smaller consumer-reporting companies operating in the USA and the smaller ones are collecting information you might not expect.

When I personally called the number to ask about Equifax waiving the fees for security freezes, the call center representative couldn't answer my question.
