"In our first year as a regionally accredited institution, we're pleased to have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top regional universities in the South-and as one offering best value". High school counselor ratings of colleges are also factored in the National Universities and National Liberal Arts Colleges rankings.

But two public institutions showed the most improvement, climbing at least a dozen spots from their ranking a year ago. The rankings emphasize outcomes, with graduation and retention rates accounting for 30 percent of the score. The other public universities are Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Michigan State, Missouri, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue and Rutgers. The rankings also highlight Tulane's focus on initiatives that encourage student success, including its service learning program, which is ranked in the nation's top 25.

In that overall list, the usual campuses are at the top: Princeton, Harvard, the University of Chicago, Yale, Columbia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford.

UC San Diego was ranked as the 42nd best national university, and ninth-best public school.

U.S. News' rankings have been both lauded by some - mostly colleges that do well and their alumni - and criticized by others who say the rankings are subjective, subject to manipulation and largely ignored by most students. UConn ranked 15 out of 58 public universities surveyed for this statistic. That represents a two-spot climb for RU.
