"That's as far as they see", she tweeted.

The phenomenon was first seen this weekend in the Bahamas, when a resident posted a video on Twitter that depicted a beach with no water.

With Hurricane Irma just starting to create her path of destruction in the United States, social media users have been left baffled after footage shows the ocean essentially "disappearing".

Its power has changed the shape of the ocean around the Bahamas.

Angela Fritz, deputy weather editor of the Washington Post noted that extremely powerful hurricanes, such as Irma can change the shape of the ocean for a period of time. On the northwest side of the island, it would be blowing the water away from the shoreline.

Kelly Johnson, posted a video on Facebook on Facebook of the beach in Long Island, Bahamas. As the storm draws water toward the center, it gets pulled away from the surroundings.

Since the hurricane is so strong and its pressure is very low, it is sucking water from its surroundings and bringing it into the core of the storm. You know they happen theoretically, but the chances of seeing the most extraordinary weather phenomena are slim to none.

Some Twitter users expressed concern over this rare occurrence as receding shoreline that exposes the ocean floor is often a sign of approaching Tsunami. The storm sucked the ocean dry near Long Island, Bahamas, as it continues to strengthen and touch ground in Florida.

It is expected to make landfall Sunday, hitting the Florida Keys, southwestern Florida and the Tampa Bay area.
