Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa make up the BRICS grouping founded in 2010.

He said recently India completed its first voluntary review of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Modi's promises to "Act East" and cement ties with India's eastern neighbour have slipped even as China has strengthened its influence.

When asked about whether India and China have left the Doklam standoff behind, Jaishankar appeared hopeful, saying, "It was a forward-looking conversation and not a backward-looking one". The discussions were constructive and forward-looking - where the relationship is going and will be going. "As far as I know, Prime Minister Modi agreed that the two sides should work together to ensure peace and tranquillity in the border areas", Shuang said. This was decided when the two leaders met in Astana on sidelines of SCO Summit this June.

Nevertheless, foreign secretary Jaishanker insisted that both Modi and Jinping "felt that there should be closer communication between the defence and security personnel of India and China" and that the Chinese premier's purported peace offering made at the BRICS summit on Sunday when he had talked of "peace and development instead of conflict and confrontation" was welcomed by India.

"On both sides, there was a sense that more efforts need to be made to ensure that these kinds of situations don't recur..."

"It is natural that between large powers there would be areas of difference and it should be handled with mutual respect". Pakistan acted quite similar to rogue country North Korea and said that there was no terrorism originating from its soil.

China, a close ally of Pakistan, has repeatedly blocked attempts by India to get the head of Jaish-e Mohammad added to a United Nations blacklist of groups linked to Al-Qaeda.

At the same time, the survey detected a rise in business confidence to its highest level in three months. This is looking increasingly likely during the near-term, given the breadth of the expansion.

On August 28, India's External Affairs Ministry announced that New Delhi and Beijing have decided on "expeditious disengagement" of their border troops in the disputed Dokalam area.

China and India should see each other as development opportunities rather than threats, Xi said, adding that peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation are the only right choice for the two countries. India had sent 300-400 troops in an effort to stop a construction unit of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) from building a road there.

Chinese President Xi Jinping meets with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Xiamen, China's Fujian Province, Sept. 3, 2017.

Xi also told Modi that "healthy and stable bilateral ties (were) in line with fundamental interests of the two nations".

Xi gave $500 million for a South-South cooperation fund to help other developing countries tackle starvation, refugees, climate change and public health challenges, besides an earlier $80-million summit pledge to support BRICS cooperation.

Indian officials were at the forefront at last year's BRICS Summit in Goa in pointing out the shortcomings and the need for having an alternative credit rating agency.
