Spectacular Hope gives Windies historic win

Posted August 30, 2017

Shai Hope made history as Windies pulled off the second-highest successful run-chase at Headingley to stun England and earn an astonishing series-levelling, five-wicket victory on day five of the second Test.

Hope, whose average of 18 over his previous 11 tests had never reflected his potential, said he trusted the win would be a stepping stone towards a brighter future for the team. West Indies 427 all out & 322 for 5. Thus setting Windies 322 runs to win. It was Windies' only fourth Test victory away from home, excluding Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, in their past 88 overseas Tests and their first in England since 2000. The win, West Indies' first in a Test in England for 17 years, was all the more impressive as just over a week earlier they had been thrashed by an innings and 209 runs inside three days in the series opener at Edgbaston.

Joe will be the same about declaring, but I hope it does not make him a safe captain because he could not legislate for Alastair Cook dropping two slip catches or the number of times the ball beat the bat when it was new from Broad and Anderson.

Roston Chase (30 off 58) chipped away at the target, frustrating England in obdurate fashion before launching Chris Woakes to mid-on where substitute fielder Mason Crane, only just on the park, grabbed a fine diving catch.

Estwick said by then, the workload had begun to take its toll especially on the Windies seamers and there was little to give as they searched for the important breakthrough.

There have been 534 first-class matches at Headingley and amazingly, though some greats of the game at Yorkshire, England and beyond have played at this world famous ground, no one had recorded a hundred in either innings.

Coming into the second Test at Headingley, the visitors were under pressure.

England's plight was summed up when Cook dropped Shai Hope on 106. But having removed his helmet, he was stumped off Ali for 41, having put on a vital 74 with Hope.

Even though Blackwood was stumped by Jonny Bairstow off the bowling of Moeen, Hope hit the winning runs the very next over and finished unbeaten on 118 off 211 deliveries, which included 14 boundaries.
