Curfew relaxed in Punjab, Haryana towns

Though the Punjab government too is being blamed for "mismanaging" the situation before and after the verdict against the dera head, chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday patted his government's back for faring better than the neighbouring Haryana.

Cutting short his Kyrgistan trip, the Home Minister spoke to both Manohar Lal Khattar and Amarinder Singh and assured them of all help in the wake of widespread violence after the conviction of controversial Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. The CM expressed shock and said the situation was allowed to escalate by the Haryana Government. He added that there was no firing and lathicharge in the state.

It said 50 minor incidents were reported on Friday in nine districts after a CBI special court held the Dera chief guilty of rape and sexual exploitation of two female disciples in 2002.

Curfew has been imposed in several places in Haryana and Punjab while prohibitory orders have been imposed in nine districts of Uttar Pradesh, all but two districts of Delhi and one district in Rajasthan following massive violence, an official said.

"I appeal to all to maintain peace".

The police have been instructed to keep a close watch on social media and have warned people not to spread rumours. He also asked DGP, Suresh Arora, to check the sensitive areas and have a tight security network in place.

On the other hand, Ram Rahim, who was arrested a day ago, has been kept in Rohtak jail.
