Samsung confirms it's working on a smart speaker

Industry watchers saw this coming, and now CNBC says it's confirmed that Samsung is working on a smart speaker like Amazon's Echo, Google's Home and Apple's HomePod.

Today, following the unveiling of the Galaxy Note 8, the President of Samsung's Mobile Division, DJ Koh, confirmed to CNBC that Samsung is indeed making a smart speaker.

In July the Wall Street Journal reported that a Samsung smart speaker was being developed; however, two weeks later the Korea Herald, also speaking with anonymous sources, said the project had been shelved because Samsung did not believe there was enough money in smart speakers. "In the future, Bixby will have the learning power to offer more intelligent and personalized interactions and seamless connections across more devices". From this perspective also, Samsung needs to quickly scale up the capabilities of Bixby.

Samsung appears to be preparing to join the voice-assisted speakers market.

Bixby is now available in US English and in Korean. So why not a smart speaker? A smart speaker would certainly be one device that users could take advantage of, so it will be interesting to see what Samsung creates. Support for other languages, devices, and third-party apps are expected to expand over time, Samsung added.

For consumers, Samsung is no stranger to launching proprietary services or products that cover similar territory to competitors and the Vega falls into a similar mold.

Originally set to roll out in the USA and South Korea in the spring with the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus flagship phones, Bixby's arrival was delayed until July.

The Echo hasn't gone completely unchallenged, as current competitors include the Google Home, which showcases the search giant's Assistant program.
