Motorists failing to stop for school buses continue to be a serious issue that risks children's lives. Once the bus is fully stopped, the flashing red lights will activate and the stop arm will deploy. Take extra care to look out for children not only in school zones, but also in residential areas, bus stops, playgrounds and parks.

Amid a reported nationwide shortage of school bus drivers just weeks before returning to school, local transportation providers say they are feeling the same effects.

Stop for stop arms and red, flashing lights - This means a child is actively getting on or off a bus.

"It is evident that motorists are not aware all the lanes must stop for a school bus stop arm if there isn't a physical barrier for a median", said Puckett.

DCS said Thursday that they are 132 drivers short for the Dallas ISD; they are 240 drivers short of the number they need to service all seven of their districts.

Kentucky law says drivers must stop if a school bus transporting children is stopped on a highway for the objective of loading or unloading passengers and has its stop arm and signal lights activated. Sometimes a child who is lagging behind comes running up to the bus after others have climbed aboard.

Some Dallas school trustees said such shortages are unacceptable. This is particularly true during the school year. "Please remind your students drivers of the speed limits as well". If it is not a divided road, even if it's a four-way street, drivers must stop.
