The leader of British Columbia's Official Opposition Christy Clark has resigned, her Liberal Party said on Friday, weeks after her government was ousted through a vote of non-confidence in the legislature of the western Canadian province.
The party position is open after Clark announced she would step aside Friday.
In Clark's case, she made herself accountable for her failure to return the B.C. Liberals to power.
In a second statement, this time to supporters, Clark said she was excited to see renewed engagement that she believes will strengthen the party. After her government's ousting, Clark tried unsuccessfully to dissolve the legislature, which would have triggered a new election.
"I think she'd become a very polarizing figure and I think there's a sense that perhaps the campaign was out of touch with where people were back in May". It may have taken her a while to get there but she did the right thing in the end.
I am so proud of everything our BC Liberal Team has accomplished.
"British Columbians expect us to be ready to go into a legislative session come September, so my caucus has asked me to step forward to lead the official opposition".
Telford said he doesn't expect the NDP government to call a by-election in her Kelowna West riding - a BC Liberal stronghold - very quickly.

Clark's announcement came almost a month after a confidence vote on June 29 toppled the narrowly-elected Liberals. During that time, she brought in a number of changes, including tearing up key provisions in teachers' contracts regarding class size and composition. "I wish she had hung on, but I understand why she thinks it's better for the party to have fresh leadership".
He said Elections BC is already putting the gears in motion. Weaver struck a deal with new Premier John Horgan and the BC NDP to form a minority government in late May. This experience illustrated what we can achieve when members of this house work together.
Coleman said he appreciated Clark stepping down, so the party could move more seamlessly to finding a new leader without bitterness from Clark.
"The premier leaves with her head held high", said Kyllo, adding that the province has created a strong economy.
BC Liberals president Sharon White issued a statement following the announcement saying that Clark is considered a "truly transformational premier who leaves British Columbia better, stronger, and with greater potential than ever".
