Lucky Whitehead Not Really All That Lucky, Arrested on Shoplifting Charge

Posted July 25, 2017

Receiver Dez Bryant was admittedly close with Whitehead, but he understood the decision the Cowboys had to make. The news comes just a few hours after reports surfaced of there being a warrant for his arrest for an alleged shoplifting incident in Virginia last month. On July 6th, he failed to appear before an arraignment, resulting in his second charge.

But get this, despite official court records with his name and birthdate - and confirmation from the Prince William County Police Dept. of an arrest of a 25-year-old Rodney Whitehead Jr. The incident took place on June 22, when a convenience store employee accused Whitehead of shoplifting less than $200 worth of merchandise.

He made the situation worse when he failed to show up for the court date and a warrant for his arrest was issued by the judge. He has another hearing on August 10.

The Dallas Cowboys announced Monday evening it had released Osbourn High School graduate Lucky Whitehead.

Garrett said any case of mistaken identity was beside the point for the Cowboys. Whitehead was dismissed from the team on Monday, July 24, 2017.

According to ESPN, Whitehead told reporters Monday: "I didn't know about that" and "I don't know what's going on". The blotter is loading up with significant contributors on this team, including running back Ezekiel Elliott, who could be in for a very lengthy suspension to start the season.

The Cowboys moved swiftly in releasing Whitehead after two defensive players were arrested during the offseason.

Multiple sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter last week that Elliott could face a one- or two-game suspension, but the National Football League denied it made a decision on a course of disciplinary action. The team also signed Greg Hardy in 2015 after Hardy was convicted of domestic violence.
