Partners develop Google Glass software for enterprises

Posted July 20, 2017

Several organizations have already been using Google Glass for enterprise companies over the past few months.

The lightweight, clip-on headset (now with increased power and battery life), has also made its way into the healthcare field.

This time, however, Google has placed its focus on verticals like manufacturing and logistics, marketing Glass 2.0 as a way to boost productivity and save money. Instead, it refocused its efforts on the enterprise sector, working with partners to make GEE useful for various companies. AGCO, an American agricultural equipment manufacturer, based in Duluth, Georgia, reduced their production times by 25%. Some of the companies authorized by Glass at Work, includes ACGO, Boeing DHL, GE, NSF International and Volkswagen.

However, a new Google Glass has been launched today, but don't get too excited because it's not for you. Hit the link for more details.

"After two years in a limited program, Glass Enterprise Edition is now available to more businesses through our network of expert partners", writes Glass project lead in a blog post announcing the unexpected move.

"We first saw signs of Glass' potential for businesses in the Glass Explorer days", Kothari continues, "As we said when we graduated, we'd been seeing incredible developments with Glass in the workplace".

Google stated the examples of DHL, where employees in the supply chain process used Glass for scanning items from racks before moving them into totes or bins or carts to be shipped. Glass isn't now designed for day-to-day office use.

The Glass Enterprise Edition is still only available at a small number of corporations and according to the lengthy Wired report on the matter, sales aren't exactly booming just yet. The transparent display is still mounted to a pair of spectacles, although the new models look a lot more like safety goggles than designer glasses.

Remember Google Glass, the computer-enabled eyewear that gave rise to terms like "glassholes" and inspired anti-surveillance startups like Cyborg Unplug? And honestly, this is probably where Glass should have always been positioned, not as the "eye douche" fashion wearable for socially awkward, detached Silicon Valley elites and Android nerds who attend Google I/O (Seriously I/O guy, stop wearing Glass to I/O - we see you).
