Paris Accord US Commitment Still Alive

Jerry Brown and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg are banding together to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions in the wake of the Trump administration's withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement. It has been created to inform Americans on state actions to address climate change, providing updates on the progress made to meet the Paris Agreement targets.

"The American government may have pulled out of the Paris agreement, but American society remains committed to it - and we will redouble our efforts to achieve its goals", Michael Bloomberg, a United Nations special envoy for cities and climate change and coalition leader, said in a statement.

The pledge will also provide a "roadmap for increase climate ambition" and for organisations to reduce their emissions.

Climate action will continue to happen in the US thanks to action by cities, states, businesses, and grassroots advocates, including the Sierra Club and our Beyond Coal and Ready For 100 Campaigns.

Since Trump announced the United States would withdraw from the Paris agreement, many states, cities, businesses and universities have joined together to show their support by signing an open letter declaring "We Are Still In" and forming coalitions like Climate Mayors and the U.S. Climate Alliance.

Rather, the pledge aims to quantify, communicate and encourage climate action in the United States, as participants across the US find new ways to work with the worldwide community and interact with global climate policy processes.

The overall ambition is to show the worldwide community how the combined effort of these subnational actors can significantly reduce USA greenhouse gas emissions and meet the US pledge "at a time of limited federal leadership".

A coalition of USA states, cities and businesses have pledged to collaborate on efforts to drive down greenhouse gas emissions in a further signal of defiance against President Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement. "The U.S. Climate Alliance is committed to meeting the standards set forth in the Paris Agreement, regardless of Washington's irresponsible actions".

He added: "The American government may have pulled out of the Paris agreement but American society remains committed to it - and we will redouble our efforts to achieve its goals".

Brown, a Democrat, and Bloomberg, a Republican-turned Independent, have both played an outsized role on the world stage when it comes to fighting global warming.

The initiative will aim to quantify the impact of the efforts business and local and state governments, in collaboration with the Rocky Mountain Institute and the World Resources Institute (WRI). Trump's departure from the Paris agreement may long roil the worldwide diplomatic community, but the parties behind Bloomberg and Brown's plan hope to develop a playbook for emissions reductions that will help the USA meet its climate change agreements - whether or not it is a signatory to that treaty.
