AMD Vega Frontier Edition unboxed and tested

Posted June 29, 2017

AMD promised to start shipping its new generation of video cards in late June, and now here we are with Radeon Vega Frontier Edition cards in our virtual shopping carts.

Each Vega Frontier Edition card will have 16GB of "high-bandwidth cache", AMD's new internal term for what we used to refer to as graphics RAM.

So, it's easy to tell that the Vega Frontier Edition isn't a cheap card and it's also not designed entirely for gaming purposes.

According to HotHardware, the Radeon Vega Frontier edition was officially planned for launch on 27th of June. The card's exterior is made up of blue-anodized brushed aluminum and has an illuminated Radeon logo. Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is priced at $1200, the same as the TITAN Xp, but the TITAN Xp is limited to consumer level drivers. Although it's not clear how much stock AMD will initially be pushing out.

However the ability to have a single GPU that is optimized for every stage of a game developer's workflow, including everything from asset production to playtesting and performance optimization is certainly going to be appealing. If you've got a line on a Frontier Edition, let us know if you can be without it for a few days. Given this card's focus on pro visualization, game development, and deep-learning tasks, the fact that it's running FP64 at the minimum rate possible for a GCN-derived part isn't that great of a surprise. Combined with Radeon Loom, AMD's revolutionary 360-degree video stitching technology, creators can stitch high-resolution video in real time.

The air-cooled version of the Vega Frontier Edition is available for preorder now for $999 from Newegg, with a release date of July 1. Developers can now use the power of the "Vega" architecture for machine learning algorithm development on the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition faster than with any other GPU on the market, before deploying it out to massive servers equipped with Radeon Instinct accelerators. The water-cooled edition is expected to launch in Q3 with an SEP of $1499.
