Trump, a Republican, later said that he had the Russian Federation matter in mind when he fired Comey. "Witch Hunt", the president wrote.

Rosenstein appointed special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election, and has told lawmakers he would only fire him with good cause.

Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special prosecutor in an investigation of alleged collusion between Trump associates and Russian Federation in the 2016 election.

The tweet, which seems to confirm that Trump himself is under investigation, appears to reference Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein as "the man" investigating him. Comey was sacked by the president on May 9 while he was overseeing the investigation into potential Russian interference into last year's election and potential collusion with the Trump presidential campaign.

Trump had expressed the same outrage when Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director from 2001 to 2013, was appointed last month by the US Department of Justice to probe Russian meddling.

Robert Mueller, the man chosen to take over the inquest as special investigator, had started investigating into president Trump's behaviour.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is overseeing the Russian Federation probe - and Special Counsel Robert Mueller reports to him.

Trump's Friday morning tweet capped off 24 hours of comments on Twitter about the investigation, including several remarks about his opponent in the 2016 election.

That tweet came a day after The Washington Post reported that Mueller had expanded his probe to look into whether Trump himself tried to obstruct justice by allegedly pressing top intelligence officials to intervene in ongoing investigations.
