Members of the U.S. Congress took the field for their traditional Republicans vs. Democrats baseball game on Thursday, with many wearing hats to honor Representative Steve Scalise, who was critically wounded by a gunman as his Republican team practiced a day before.

"We're all praying for him", House Speaker Paul Ryan said during the interview right before the game, adding that Scalise's wife "Jennifer and the kids are here".

Scalise, a congressman from Louisiana who is the No 3 House Republican, suffered injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in the left hip on a baseball field where he and other lawmakers were practicing for a charity baseball game.

The annual charity game continued as scheduled despite House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R., La.) and four others being hospitalized after James Hodgkinson opened fire at a Republican team practice.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago", Sava said, suggesting that the Louisana Republican had faced an imminent risk of death when he arrived by helicopter at the facility after Wednesday's shooting.

A congressional aide, a lobbyist and one police officer were also shot before police killed the gunman.

The FBI said that the shooter's weapons found at the scene - a 9mm handgun and 7.62mm caliber rifle - had been legally purchased.

President Donald Trump thanked the members of Congress and others for supporting the Congressional Baseball Game with a recorded statement played at Nationals Park Thursday night. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital multiple times.

We're unsure how this reveal will be done, but we know it will be during the annual league Awards show on NBCSN and Sportsnet. The one thing that didn't materialize was a large number of trades happening involving players teams didn't want to expose.

It continued, "We are confident that these proceedings have given a voice to the many victims who felt powerless and silenced". More than 60 women have come forward to accuse Cosby of sexual misconduct, alleging a pattern of sexual abuse over decades.

Police presence increased around Capitol after shooting that wounded congressman, others
In March, Hodgkinson met with sheriff deputies in IL after they received calls that he had fired 50 shots on his property. The married man has also posted abusive and expletive-laden comments about Mr Trump on social media as recently as Monday.

Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise "will require a period of healing and rehabilitation". Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector, had been living out of his van near the park. The first said that he "remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".

He was one of five people injured from gunshots during the shooting but the only congressman who was hit.

Doctors "fully expect him to walk", Sava said, "and hopefully run". Capitol Police say she is in good condition and did not sustain any life-threatening injuries.

Scalise's Chief of Staff shared a message from the congressman's family at a Friday press conference.

"The Congressional Baseball Game has never been about Republicans against Democrats", said Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-C.A., in an opinion piece he wrote for CNN.

But Flake said the final score wasn't likely to matter this year.
