Asked whether he had spoken with Trump about his trip, Rodman said: "I'm pretty sure he's pretty much happy with the fact that I'm over here trying to accomplish something that we both need". It's unclear the goal of Rodman's visit, but the former basketball star is one of the only Americans who's ever met current North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un.

CNN, citing two unnamed North Korean officials, said Rodman was expected to arrive in Pyongyang today, but gave no additional details on the goal of the trip.

Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Under Secretary of State Thomas Shannon said that the U.S. was aware of Rodman's visit, and that he is traveling as a private citizen.

In 2014, Rodman arranged a basketball game with other former NBA players and North Koreans and regaled leader Kim with a rendition of "Happy Birthday".

Rodman, whose NBA career started with the Detroit Pistons in 1986 and culminated with his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011, has used basketball to disarm his critics and charm Kim, one of the most reclusive leaders in the world.

He is expected to arrive in Pyongyang on Tuesday.

The controversy surrounding Rodman's past trips to North Korea eventually became too hot to handle for Paddy Power, his previous sponsor.

The drone was found at a South Korean border town last Friday and South Korean investigators have since discovered hundreds of photos from its Sony-made in-built camera, a Defense Ministry official said, requesting anonymity because of department rules. The network confirmed Rodman's ultimate destination with North Korean officials.

Former US basketball player Dennis Rodman (C) is surrounded by the media as he arrives at Beijing International Airport from North Korea on January 13, 2014.

The visit, the objective of which remained unclear, would be Rodman's latest to the nuclear-armed nation.

When Rodman visited the North in February 2013 with the Harlem Globetrotters, an exhibition basketball team, Kim was said to have personally gifted him with a present that said, "For our friendship".
