Oliver Calls "Turbo Bullshit" on Trump's Claim Comey Wasn't Investigating Him

Posted May 16, 2017

The "Last Week Tonight" host doesn't believe President Donald Trump's claims that former FBI director James Comey said that Trump himself wasn't under investigation three times.

In fact Donald Trump almost admitted to Lester Holt that this was the reason he fired Comey.

"I call bullshit. I call turbo bullshit on that", said Oliver. Almost a week into the fallout from Comey's firing, Oliver is just as exhausted as you are and he no longer remembers what normal weeks are like. He also pointed to a tweet from Trump that suggested the president may have recorded his private meetings with Comey.

Most puzzling to Oliver was Trump's written assertion, in that termination letter, that Comey had assured the president "on three separate occasions" that he was not under investigation.

U.S. committed to Turkey's security, Mattis tells Turkish PM Yildirim
Last month, Erdogan said if Turkey and the United States joined forces, they could turn Raqa into a "graveyard" for Daesh. President Donald Trump approved arming the Syrian Kurdish militia this week to support the US -led offensive in Raqqa.

Macron backs Paris' 2024 Olympic bid
The vice presidents since March have looked at possible reforms to the bid city process, including awarding two Games in 2017. The IOC has four vice presidents looking into the prospect of awarding the 2024 and 2028 Games at the same time in September.

Saracens retain European title with victory over Clermont
After Owen Farrell edged Sarries eight points clear, a dazzling Nick Abendanon try saw Clermont edge within a point. In desperation Clermont began to concede penalties and Farrell kept the scoreboard ticking over for Saracens .

"Trump is so desperate to appear dominant, he will rush to take the credit for anything, no matter how bad it is", Oliver noted.

Despite the White House pointing to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's recommendation, Trump undermined it in an interview with NBC's Lester Holt. "If you said he did it because Comey is 6'8" and Trump feels like a tiny little man standing next to him, I would believe you. If you said he fired Comey because he's investigating Russian Federation, I'd believe you.

"It is the kind of response that makes you ask three questions: One, can he really be this stupid?" Two, does he really think we as a country are this stupid? One way to do this would be to successfully carry out the Russian Federation investigations in Congress, as well as push Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint a special prosecutor. "The point is, the founding fathers created a system of checks and balances to limit the power of the president, but it only works if someone f--ing checks and balances".

John Oliver called on the Republicans in Congress to keep Donald Trump in check following firing of James Comey. They do have some options. It's on you. Because when you've got the presidential equivalent of a 5-year-old s---ting on the salad bar of a Ruby Tuesday's, at some point, you stop blaming the 5-year-old and you start blaming the people who are not stopping him.
