"Our letter carriers walk through the community every day and often come face to face with the sad reality of too many hungry people", said food drive Coordinator Bob Bottegal. All you have to do is leave non-perishable food donations in a bag by your mailbox, and your carrier will do the rest.

For food though, they say canned goods, pastas, soups, peanut butter and anything that will last a while on a shelf are best.

Last year, letter carriers collected a record 80.1 million pounds of food donations along their postal routes.

Collections in recent years have exceeded 12,000 pounds of non-perishable food collected, with expectations for this year's drive to be even higher. Do not donate items in glass containers or items that have expired.

"If you've got a couple of cans, leave it in the mailbox", he said.

Bill Shorten issues stinging budget reply
Finance Minister Mathias Cormann called on Shorten to submit his speech to the Parliamentary Budget Office for costing. It would mean a worker on $55,000 would pay $275 extra a year, while someone on $80,000 would face an extra $400.

The annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive is Saturday, and mail carriers will be collecting food for the South Plains Food Bank. "Afterwards, both staff and volunteers will transport the donated food back the Food Bank where it will be sorted and distributed directly to food insecure families and individuals across Yolo County". Manna helped a total of 11,254 families and 14 percent of them were active duty, reserve, retired or veteran military.

Let's make 2017 the year we stamp out hunger in our community! Over the course of its 25-year history, the drive has collected more than a billion pounds of food, thanks to our universal delivery network that spans the entire nation, including Puerto Rico, Guam and U.S. Virgin Islands. "Your donation on Saturday could help your neighbor up the road".

"We will be providing snacks and drinks at each site", according to Raymond Bautista, Volunteer & Food Drive coordinator. He added that some bags were sent to the Ellerbe post office.

One in 5 people faces hunger in Oregon communities and an estimated 270,000 people receive food from a food pantry in the Oregon Food Bank's network.

The timing is important, with food banks, pantries and shelters running low on donations from the winter-holidays and with summer looming, when most school meal programs are suspended.
