Punjab keep hopes alive

With 10 points from 11 matches, Kings XI Punjab need to win every single one of their remaining three matches to stand any chance of finishing in the top four and with it qualifying for the playoffs. They will look to consolidate their position at the top of the points table to stake a claim at the playoff spot. The Aussie raced to 41 off just 19 balls in the first six overs with seven fours and a six. Lions have also suffered a body blow losing their opener Brendon McCullum, who will miss the remaining matches after suffering a hamstring strain.

However, Kolkata could manage only five runs from it as Punjab completed a 14-run win and kept their hopes alive in the tournament.

KKR got off to a blazing start once again, with Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn adding 39 runs in 3.4 overs when the former was castled by Mohit Sharma.

Lynn played a lone hand for KKR and none of his team- mates contributed substantially.

However, the icing on the cake was the run out of Lynn. Captain Gautam Gambhir scored just 8 runs.

Narine hit two boundaries off Sandeep Sharma's first two balls of the first over to announce his intentions while Lynn too hit a four in the same over to join the party.

Earlier, Kings XI Punjab innings was propped up by skipper Glenn Maxwell's quickfire 44 off 25 balls as they set a target of 168 in 20 overs. They made a wobbly start but made a late recovery to put up a respectable total at the PCA Stadium here.

From 63/3 at the halfway mark, Kings XI took 104 runs from the final 10 overs.

Kings XI Punjab will be fresh with the self-destruction they suffered on Sunday by the Gujarat Lions - lost despite posting 189 batting first in Mohali.

Martin Guptill and Shaun Marsh perished in quick succession, and it was left to Saha and skipper Maxwell to start the fix work.

Gambhir suggested that this could be the end of the Narine opening experiment. But this is one game when we haven't been at our best and that happens.

Yadav though had the last laugh as he dismissed Vohra in the fifth over with a short delivery.

In the next over, Narine got Guptill (12; 16b 1x4 0x6) leg before wicket.

Not in contention for the playoffs, Lions were depleted without global recruits Andrew Tye, Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Bravo and Jason Roy (on national duty), and played only three against Kings XI - Dwayne Smith, Aaron Finch and James Faulkner.

Shaun Marsh looked good for his 11, milking two boundaries before Woakes castled him.
