NHL Playoffs: Minus Crosby, Penguins edge Capitals to take 3-1 lead

The Capitals are essentially in the same place they were a year ago after losing 3-2 in Game 4 of their second-round series this season against the Penguins on Wednesday. It hurt them, they lost, and now have their backs against the wall three games to one.

The director of the Canadian Concussion Centre at Toronto Western Hospital says when it comes to the number of acknowledged concussions, you can usually double the total for athletes who participate in collision sports.

"With the way guys shoot the puck with these kinds of sticks now, you see a lot of those teams with a lot of injuries", Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik said. If they get him back, they might just be unstoppable. Both teams have won their home games in the series to this point. Josh Archibald and Oskar Sundqvist were out there a long time, so it's a reasonable assumption they won't play tonight.

Washington found itself in a last-minute pickle that might or might not have been justified thanks to some acting from the Pens' Nick Bonino on a high-sticking call immediately following the Caps' decision to pull Braden Holtby from the net. This one saw Caps forward Andre Burakovsky get Jake Guentzel in the face and open up a cut near his mouth, meaning it should have resulted in a double-minor.

With Murray injured in Game 1 of the first round, Fleury has come in and played as well as anyone could expect. It seems bold as hell but he's well aware of his cognitive functioning and he's better acquainted with concussions than nearly any layperson. Even though the Capitals possession numbers are dwarfing the Penguins, their inability to produce has left them out in the cold. And it involved the exact same players, but with the roles reversed.

December 5, 2011 - After only eight games back from his concussion, Crosby collides with Boston's David Krejci. "Sometimes they come around quickly". Oshie in the box with two minutes to go and effectively killed any chance Washington had at a hopeful comeback. Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan repeatedly uses it to describe his team. "(Malkin) put it in a good spot for me".

That's the constitutional standard in the country. "You tell someone, I'm going to kill you "bitch" and then he does it". KASTE: Yeah, it's really tempting to compare these two cases as they're kind of coming up to our attention right now.

Ryan Getzlaf was a one-man wrecking crew at a big moment for the Anaheim Ducks.

"I knew that I got all of it, but I didn't know it was going in", Schultz said.

You can look at shot differentials to dilute the Caps' current predicament with some fairly placed nuance if you want, but that is a sad excuse for this team in the wake of a 3-2 loss on Wednesday at PPG Paints Arena. It's unfortunate. Tough to be in that situation. "I'm pretty sure we're ready for that".

Now that Parker will miss the rest of the postseason with a leg injury, the Spurs will be tested like they rarely have been before. They are like a prizefighter who won't go down but are most definitely staggering.

In the regular season, the Penguins overcame injuries to Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Matt Murray, Kris Letang, Olli Maatta, Carl Hagelin and Conor Sheary, among others, to still finish with the second best record in the National Hockey League.
