Dallas cop who shot Black teen outside house party is fired

Former Balch Springs police Officer Roy Oliver was sacked after fatally shooting 15-year-old Jordan Evans in the head with a rifle.

Officer Roy Oliver shot high school freshman Jordan Edwards with a rifle as he sat in a vehicle with his two brothers and two other teenagers while it drove away from a party on Saturday night. The officer was placed on administrative leave before Tuesday's firing when Balch Springs Police said he violated department policies.

Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber appears to be acting swiftly to mitigate any controversy over the shooting, particularly after the department changed its version of events.

"Chief Haber said the action violated several department policies, and said county investigations continue".

Police had initially claimed that Oliver fired on the auto because it was aggressively backing up, but footage showed that it was actually driving away.

The police department's latest statement, released Tuesday night, says officers entering the house heard gunshots ring out during a "chaotic scene with numerous people running away from the location".

"We anxiously await this officer's.arrest for the crime of murder", the Edward's family said in a statement.

Lee Merritt, an attorney for Edwards' family, said the officer shot him with a rifle through the front passenger side window.

Edwards is the youngest of the 333 people shot and killed by police so far in 2017, according to a Washington Post database that tracks such shootings.

They also feel officer painted his name, and those of his brothers, in a negative light when announcing the initial incorrect information about what happened the night Edwards died. While inside the house trying to locate the homeowners, police heard gunshots outside.

Earlier this week, Haber withdrew police claims that the officer had shot at the auto because it was backing up "aggressively" toward cops. "Not only have Jordan's brothers lost their best friend, they witnessed firsthand his violent, senseless murder".

Edward's family agrees. Tuesday night, family friend Mercedes Jackson attended an NAACP meeting in Dallas. That account of events was contradicted by the body camera footage, which Haber said showed the vehicle driving away from officers when Oliver shot. A rally planned to protest Jordan Edwards' death has been postponed at the family's request.

The officer, who has not been identified, has been with the Balch Spring Police Department for six years. "Everyone should wait until the facts come out and we know more", she said, according to the paper.

Meritt said police also detained Jordan's father when he showed up at the station asking about his children. Then, when officers went outside to investigate, they saw a vehicle backing out of a parking spot.

The brother who was driving pulled over and tried to motion to police for help, she said. The vehicle pulled forward as the officer continued to approach it giving verbal commands, and then continued on the main roadway driving away from the officer.
