Trump, Turnbull to meet after tense phone call

President Donald Trump will return to New York City for the first time in his presidency on Thursday.

It will likely be a fiery homecoming for the president on Thursday (Friday AEST), who has not been in NY since January 19, the day before his inauguration. The meeting with Turnbull also marks Trump's first visit to his hometown New York City since assuming office in January.

"Thousands of people are ready to protest Donald Trump", said Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition which is co-organising one of the large-scale protests.

"Donald Trump is coming to New York City for the first time since his inauguration", the invite reads.

"The important thing is that the risky, reckless threatening conduct by North Korea comes to an end", Mr Turnbull said before departing for NY.

Hundreds of New York City police officers will secure Trump's appearance aboard the Intrepid, with more standing guard on surrounding streets. The WFP, along with multiple activist groups, is planning actions in and around Trump Tower and the Intrepid, a decommissioned aircraft carrier docked in the Hudson River that will host a dinner and reception with the prime minister of Australia to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea, in which the United States and Australia fought together against Japan.

The president is not expected to spend a night at Trump Tower but may make a stop there before spending the weekend at his golf club an hour away in Bedminister, New Jersey. He and his friends, without their parents' approval, would ride the subway into Manhattan and marvel at the circus-like atmosphere that seemed to teem from Times Square and other areas in NY, friends say.

The NYPD said in a statement to expect "temporary" closures near the Intrepid and Trump Tower, but declined to be specific.

Despite being from New York, Trump has very low support in both the state and city, compared to Hillary Clinton. The fight prompted the U.S. president to label it his "worst call by far" with a foreign leader and cut short the telephone conversation. "I had so many things going", Trump said in an interview with Reuters last month.

The president last week on Fox News sought to explain why he had not been back to his home state. The two plan to stay in the city until Barron finishes the school year.

A spokesman for Mayor de Blasio, a fierce Trump critic, told the Daily News he "declined an invitation to the event before the President had anything to do with" it. Additionally, city officials have portrayed the cost of the security at Trump Tower as a financial burden.
