Leading up to the 2017 NFL draft, there was plenty of buzz swirling about the late rise of Cal quarterback Davis Webb, who many in the national media believed was destined to crash the first round. Webb originally opted to take his graduate transfer year to Colorado, though he had a change of heart midway through the summer and landed in Berkeley. In fact, they didn't even have head coach Ben McAdoo meet with Webb during the pre-draft process because they thought it was a waste of time.
McAdoo knows it's tough to groom a future starter when the guy now in the job is always there, and he knows it will be a challenge to get Webb live experience before he eventually has to take over.
The Giants have had a troubling trend in the draft this year of reaching for players and selecting ones that are not as highly rated as other players available at their position.
"It's rare when you can say a third-round pick could be the heir apparent, but in this case, could be true", said Chris Simms, the lead NFL analyst for Bleacher Report and former Ramapo High School star quarterback who played eight seasons in the league. The Giants will give him that time as Webb shouldn't see the field outside of preseason games.
For one, they have little invested in him if they figure out that he's not "the" guy.
Webb, who after his Pro Day display, said he felt he had "first-round talent", nonetheless sounded upbeat about being chosen where he was.

FY2017 EPS Estimates for Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) Lifted by Jefferies Group
Caterpillar Inc . (NYSE:CAT) has been given an average rating of "Hold" by the twenty-five analysts that are covering the firm. The industrial products company reported $1.28 EPS for the quarter, beating the Zacks' consensus estimate of $0.62 by $0.66.
The question is: will Davis Webb make the successful transition from college star to New York Giants franchise quarterback?
"I think it's huge", McAdoo said.
"You saw what happened in the first round, teams trading up everything to get those (quarterbacks)", Ross said, referring to Chicago (Mitchell Trubisky), Kansas City (Patrick Mahomes) and Houston (Deshaun Watson) paying steep prices to move up. "It is nothing that we had to talk to him about". "Hopefully, he can sit on the sidelines and learn the game". "I'm sure he's disappointed right now that he wasn't a higher pick". Webb will be under team control for four years, his contract expiring when Manning is 40. Having a receiver to throw to in Odell Beckham Jr. makes for a nice landing spot for a young quarterback.
The Giants were expected to take a quarterback in this draft, and they got one in Webb.
