United States President Donald Trump ordered the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group to sail to waters near the Korean Peninsula.

Top Trump administration officials will hold a rare White House briefing on Wednesday for the entire Senate on the North Korean situation, senior Senate aides say.

"That's why we called for a protest at 2:00 on Wednesday at the White House, so senators can see people outside saying "No" to war with North Korea", Griffin added. It made no specific mention of military options, though it said the USA would defend itself and friends.

But it certainly reflected the increased American alarm over North Korea's progress in developing a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike the US mainland.

"As the leadership of North Korea speaks and behaves in a more and more aggressive and threatening way, I do think it's appropriate for us to ensure that we have the resources in the region to defend both the 30,000 American troops on the Korean Peninsula, the almost 300,000 Americans on the Korean Peninsula, and our vital allies - both South Korea and Japan", Coons continued.

While tensions have increased since Trump took office, they've escalated dramatically in recent weeks as American and other intelligence agencies suggested the North was readying for a possible nuclear test.

North Korea, meanwhile, held live-fire military drills to mark the anniversary of the founding of its military.
