Smith in the mix at Texas Open golf

Posted April 24, 2017

Kevin Chappell has ended a frustrating run of near misses when he clinched his first PGA tour title with a one-stroke triumph over fellow American Brooks Koepka at the Texas Open on Sunday.

Smith is playing the Valero Texas Open for the first occasion but he has been at home on the Greg Norman designed layout, recording twelve birdies and an eagle in his 54 holes to date.

Laird looked confident when he birdied the second, but he bogeyed three of the next four holes and laboured to a three-over 75 to close on three under par.

He made a clutch par save at 17 after he drove to the front fringe and opted to putt, but he misjudged the line and pace and then raced his birdie putt four feet past the cup before the return dropped in the left side.

Leader, Chappell, has been 4th and runner-up in this event previously and brought some good form into this week having finished 7th at the Masters two weeks ago.

Kevin Chappell has finally won on the PGA Tour. With this win, you just have to control the spin, you know.
