Volkswagen reveals ID Crozz at Shanghai Auto Show

Posted April 20, 2017

VW's display at the Shanghai show includes the first public presentation of the ID Crozz crossover concept. General Motors Co.'s Buick unit and Ford Motor Co. also have announced new electric vehicles for China this year.

VW Group sold almost 4 million cars in China past year but only "several hundred" imported new energy vehicles.

It's the most powerful Mini ever, boasting a turbocharged two-litre four-cylinder engine producing 228 horsepower and 258lb ft of torque, which enable it to reach 100km/h in 6.2 seconds from a standing start. The automaker said it hopes to launch 30 new electric vehicle models within a decade.

Regulators have jolted the industry with a proposal to require electrics to account for at least 8 percent of each brand's production by next year.

At the Shanghai show, the industry's biggest marketing event this year, nearly every global and Chinese brand plans to display at least an electric concept vehicle, if not a model ready for sale, alongside its latest SUVs and sedans. A million pure-electric sales a year and full autonomy (for which MEB cars are equipped) by 2025 is the target.

Previous rules required foreign automakers to hand over key technology to a Chinese partner or pay import taxes even on models produced in China.

An electric vehicle with a big battery obviously offers more range, but at the same time, it takes longer to charge-making it hard to quickly refuel for road trips. Most Chinese automakers sell plug-in battery models but their range is usually no more than 120 to 150 kilometers (75 to 95 miles) - too little to attract most buyers. The model is slated to begin production in 2020, Bloomberg said.

Volvo said the vehicle will be based on the economy-size CMA platform shared with Chinese automaker Geely, which bought the Swedish brand from Ford Motor 2010.

VW expects that this mode will be limited in the 2020 models due to regulations, but expects the fully autonomous system to be capable of taking control of the auto in most driving situations by 2025 in most major markets.

The German manufacturer also hopes to form a joint venture just for NEVs with Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group (JAC) (600418.SS), and any models from that partnership would be on top of those plans, a spokesman told Reuters.

Volkswagen is developing an entirely new range of avant-garde electric vehicles. But behind the scenes, many are anxious that batteries capable of delivering the same driving range as gasoline cars are still too expensive.

This same platform will also be shared with Audi, Seat, Skoda and so on for future vehicles. News reports say regulators might have agreed to lower or delay them in an updated plan due out this year, but there has been no official confirmation.
