US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Washington had "no doubt" it was the Syrian leadership behind the attack.

American officials believe the mid-week chemical attack which targeted many civilians was launched by a Syrian government aircraft, using a nerve agent, possibly sarin.

Russian Federation has argued that the death of civilians in the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun on Tuesday resulted from Syrian forces hitting a rebel chemical arsenal there.

"Putin views the USA strikes on Syria as aggression against a sovereign state in violation of the norms of worldwide law and on a made-up up pretext", said Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, according to the Independent.

The Syrian government swiftly denounced what it described as "illegal action targeting one of our airbases against our sovereignty", the first time US forces intentionally targeted Assad's forces since the beginning of Syria's six-year civil war. A US official told Fox News that the primary target was an airbase at Shayrat, outside Homs. "Acting on the orders of their commander-in-chief, they have sent an important message the United States will no longer stand idly by as Assad, aided and abetted by Putin's Russian Federation, slaughters innocent Syrians with chemical weapons and barrel bombs".

Kalin said: "The destruction of the Sharyat airbase marks an important step to ensure that chemical and conventional attacks against the civilian population do not go unpunished".

U.S. President Donald Trump insisted his first military venture since taking office was in the "vital national security interest of the United States".

"We hope that the Council can unite and exercise that responsibility to investigate the alleged use of chemical weapons in Khan Shaykhun", Feltman stated.

President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the attack "aggression against a sovereign state in violation of worldwide law".

The US fired a barrage of 59 cruise missiles at the Shayrat base in response to a suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held town on Tuesday widely blamed on the Damascus regime.

Overnight the USA fired 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles in response to Tuesday's chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime that killed more than 100 people.

After Thursday's US missile strikes, Tillerson said Russian Federation had failed to carry out the 2013 agreement to secure Syrian chemical weapons. "No child of God should ever suffer such horror", he said.

"Indiscriminate chemical weapons attacks on civilians can never be tolerated and must have consequences. Our prior interventions in this region have done nothing to make us safer and Syria will be no different".

I support the admin's strike on the air base that launched the chemical attack.

At the time, he tweeted: "Again to our very foolish leader, do not attack Syria - if you do many very bad things will happen & from that fight the USA gets nothing".
