Apple sold an estimated 11.9 million Apple Watches previous year, accounting for 49 percent of global smartwatch shipments, research company Canalys' data showed.

We have been hearing rumors about the Apple Watch 3 for some time and according to a recent report, the device will launch in the second half of 12017.

DigiTimes, which keeps its ear close to the ground within Apple's supply chain, said Wednesday that Chinese company Compal Electronics will start to shoulder some of the Apple Watch Series 2 manufacturing, which is now built entirely by Quanta Computer, also in China.

Although Digitimes did not mention anything about the features of "Apple Watch Series 3", but it is expected for Apple to provide a next generation wearable with a better overall performance that includes improvement on speed and an extended battery life.

In 2016 Apple analysts estimated that the Cupertino, California-based technology giant shipped more than 11 million smartwatches. The publication alleged that Apple was going to keep the same core look that it's got going since 2015 with the very first Apple Watch.

Cellular connectivity in the Apple Watch 3 will allow users to be able to make phone calls and stream music without their iPhones.

It has been learned that tech pundit Christopher Rolland has shared that Apple fans can expect the next version of the Apple Watch to have its own SIM card slot and a built-in 4G LTE connectivity. If true, the latest Digitimes report puts to rest a debate among analysts and market researchers about whether the new Watch would come in September or April.

As per 9 to 5 Mac's report, the 3 generation of the Apple watches may not feature any dramatic design revamps on the outside, but battery and internal specs are likely to be improved. The Apple Watch Series 2 already boasts a super-bright, colourful and crisp display, so chances are it won't be tweaked too much.

While Compal hasn't confirmed this development officially, it apparently moved equipment for smart device production to plants in Chongqing recently in preparation for Apple Watch production.
