North Carolina Wins NCAA Basketball Championship

The coldest man in college basketball was the hero on Monday night.

Gonzaga's Mark Few is a rookie in Final Fours and title games.

This time, the North Carolina got it right.

The Bulldogs tried to keep the big picture in mind - they had the lead in the national title game with less than two minutes to play.

Kennedy Meeks, the man in the middle for North Carolina, finished with 7 points, four fouls and a huge blocked shot.

But Williams-Goss almost carried Gonzaga home by himself.

A year after having their hearts broken on a buzzer beater by Villanova, the Tar Heels gutted out an ugly performance against Gonzaga to win it 71-65, bringing home their 6th NCAA title. I felt like I was always trying.

"My teammates believed in me", he said. It's all about the next thing.

"Coach Smith, I don't think I should be mentioned in the same sentence as him", Williams told CBS' Jim Nantz during the trophy presentation.

The story of the game ended up being the referees.

Foul trouble dogged both teams in the second half.

Most freakish sequence: With 8:02 left, Berry got called for a foul for (maybe) making contact with Karnowski and stripping the ball from the big mans hands.

The game was hyped as a big-man showdown. There were 37 victories along the way, WCC regular season and tournament championships, and a one seed in the NCAA tournament.

"It's a very hard game to call". "I'm thinking our offense stinks". When there was a break in play after North Carolina went up 70-65, Meeks ran and hugged coach Roy Williams in front of the bench. "So we were at fault just as much as anybody else". The second segment will begin when the game clock reads 9:59 and ends when the half ends.

Joel Berry II came to the desert not sure if he would be able to play.

But at least the officiating was equally bad on both sides for most of the game, with the exception of this call in the game's final minute when North Carolina led by a single point.

But Hicks finally found the rhythm down the stretch. “I dont think I should be mentioned in the same sentence with him. "Things have been swirling around", Williams said. "From my angle, it didn't look like an out-of-bounds situation or I would have called a review". I swear to goodness, that's not what I'm thinking. For the most part it was a sloppy game in which the two teams combined to miss 86 shots while shooting 34.8% from the field, with Gonzaga committing 14 turnovers while making only 11 assists.

The Tar Heels regrouped, refocused and outplayed Gonzaga over the final 20 minutes to prevent any deja vu. You know whether it's to lose in this game again or win tonight. "That was the last couple of craziest seconds of my life because I had flash backs to past year", UNC Student Anna Morrison said. "And for us we're just happy we came out on top, and this is an awesome feeling".

North Carolina hit just 36 per cent from the field.

In beating Gonzaga, the Tar Heels handed them just their second loss this season.
