Fun Facts About April Fools' Day

Posted April 02, 2017

I bet you some marketing reps lost their job that day.

Those who forgot about the change and celebrated the new year on the wrong day were called April fools and presumably laughed at by their more well-informed friends. This same prank was resurrected in 1856 when newspaper reports told people that the "lions of the Tower of London" would be washed on April 1 at the White Gate in the Tower.

The tale is set on "March 32", which could be a playful way of referring to April 1, thus marking a day to make someone feel like a nitwit.

Despite its popularity globally, however, the stories surrounding the origin of April Fools' Day vary.

The leading theory is that back in the 1500s, Pope Gregory XIII switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian version, which changed the first day of the year from April 1 to January 1. Books, films, telemovies and television episodes have used April Fool's Day as their title or inspiration.

On the other hand, some believe that it was the result of a desire to celebrate the turning of the season at springtime, the end of grey winter days to bright, sunny longer ones. Even news magazines join these celebration by publishing a hoax and will be revealed the next day.

But why dedicate an entire holiday to tricking people?
