Jerry Jones says training camp is deadline for Tony Romo resolution

His response was intriguing. At this point though, no official comment has been given by the parties tagged in this National Football League rumor. Another report also claims that the Denver Broncos are no longer interested in him.

There is one odd way the delay in the inevitable has been a benefit to Romo.

"No", Elway said. "Same old thing". When asked if it was important to get resolution on the Romo situation, Jones laid out a surprising timetable.

Infer from that what you will. Mike Fisher, a Dallas insider and Publisher of our Scout Dallas Cowboys website, Cowboys HQ, is dubious about Elway's comments.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has led in shepherding the National Football League to greater heights. The assumption being that is where you are going to be when you have to make a decision. Until that changes, it has been widely reported that the Broncos will have no interest. If no trade is made, the Cowboys intend to release Romo. Joseph sounded confident one month ago that the Broncos offense would be effective with either Siemian or Lynch under center, just as long as the offensive line was shored up.

"I feel good about how we're doing, we being the Cowboys, me and Tony", Jones said.

The Broncos' head of football operations then reiterated his faith in the two young quarterbacks now on his roster, Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian. The plan is to stay the course there and see what's available in the (April 27-29) draft. We'll just kind of address it as we go along. But we like both, and Paxton was a first-rounder previous year for a reason. Paxton [Lynch] was a first-rounder previous year for a reason, and then Trevor came in and played very well.

The delay of the inevitable has folks conjuring up Jones and Romo in some sort of staring contest, waiting for the other to blink.

Jones is carrying on like nothing is unusual, he indicates Romo is happy with the situation, and the Cowboys aren't bothered at all by having almost $25 million in cap space being used up by a backup quarterback as this all plays out.

My take is this. I have every reason to believe Tony is comfortable.

In the short term, my gut tells me that Elway and company are committed to this Mexican standoff with Jones and the Cowboys brass. The Broncos and Texans have been pegged as the top teams to acquire Romo, should Jones finally free his veteran QB and should Romo pass on advances from CBS and Fox Sports. The opportunities were there with Romo's recurring injuries. It would be better to let Romo move on and get established with a new team as soon as possible. Garrett also said the team feels good about Kellen Moore, the backup quarterback it re-signed last week.
