For Georgetown, Ewing's candidacy could represent the most opportunistic scenario to keep the school's coaching job in the Hoyas' family. This can be an elite program because of the passionate fan base, the opportunity to play in an National Basketball Association arena, the talent in Washington D.C. and the way the Big East is thriving despite realignment four years ago.

The move is sure to throw the annual NCAA coaching carousel into overdrive as prospective replacements attempt to gain some traction at the Big East program, located in the heart of one of the hot-bed hoops recruiting areas in the country. After that came a 15-18 season in 2016 and the Hoyas finished with a 14-18 record this season. Georgetown reached the NCAA Tournament eight times during Thompson's reign, including a Final Four appearance in 2006-07 when the club went 30-7.
