Brazilian Beef Banned by Several Countries After Reports of Rotten Meat Imports

Food inspectors and officials are accused of accepting bribes in exchange for overlooking unsanitary factory conditions and potentially contaminated meat.

Other countries, including China and Hong Kong, also suspended meat imports from Brazil.

Members of the public were also advised to carefully read the labels of corned beef, chicken patties and chicken nuggets before purchasing them.

South Africa was the latest to join the growing list of countries that are instituting partial or total bans on Brazilian meat.

Sales for internal consumption in Brazil are not affected. Sales in 2016 reached USA $5.9 billion in poultry and United States $4.3 billion in beef, according to Brazilian government data. Eight of these ten importers purchased products from one Brazilian meat processor at the heart of the meat fiasco. If inspectors were paid to not do their jobs, it is impossible to know if putrid products entered the market, Alcadipani said.

The beef, pork and poultry sector represents 15% of Brazil's exports. The investigation found that meatpackers have been shipping exports that bear traces of salmonella and even manipulating the export certificates for meat being shipped to European markets.

The ministry said the companies implicated by the Brazilian authorities supply 99.5 per cent of the corned beef on the local market.
