Surprise, Surprise: The New Lotus Elise Sprint is Even Lighter

Posted March 19, 2017

Inside, Lotus added an Exige-sourced open shifter (1.1 pounds), carbon fiber race seats (13 pounds), and a combination of polycarbonate materials for the access panel, roll hoop cover, and engine cover, saving another 13 pounds.

Keeping with tradition, Lotus has unveiled an even lighter Elise variant for European buyers.

Called the Elise Sprint - reviving the "Sprint" name of old - it features a host of weight saving measures to trim mass to 798kg without fluids - 26kg lighter than standard versions of the updated auto. It sheds 41kg compared to the regular roadster, meaning it dry weight is now just 798kg in total.

If ever a auto didn't really need to go on a diet, it was the Lotus Elise.

Lotus made some modifications to the Elise's aesthetics as well, which applies across the entire lineup. The latest flavor of the Lotus Elise, which isn't offered in the United States, is the Lotus Elise Sprint.

With the weight saving parts in place, the regular 1.6-litre 134bhp auto manages 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds, while the more potent Sprint 220 with its 217bhp 1.8-litre engine does the dash in 4.1 seconds. It can be had on both the standard Elise and the Elise 220, giving them a power-to-weight ratio of 168hp and 257hp per tonne, respectively ─ more than what the forthcoming Alpine A110 can do.

The interior has been adjusted, too, to make it fresh. The Elise also gets a revised centre console and new graphics on the instrument panel. Not a lot, admittedly, but it could make life that little bit less awkward. The Elise Sprint's 1.6-litre outputs 149g/km of CO2, while the 1.8-litre of the Elise Sprint 220 comes in at 173g/km.

As for the price of the Lotus Elise Sprint (available this very second), expect to pay from £37,300, which is £5,000 more than the Elise Sport.

Prices for the Elise now start from 32, 300 pounds (Rs. 26.12 lakh) for the base Elise Sport, going up to 47,400 pounds (Rs. 38.34 lakh) for the Elise Cup 250.
