Dalton jobless rate rises to highest in the state

Jobless rates across Pennsylvania ranged from 3.4 percent in Chester County to 7.1 percent in Fayette County.

Butts County's labor force also grew from 10,576 to 10,606. The number of employed resident dropped by 889 to 229,332.

New unemployment claims are compiled weekly based on the number of workers who filed for unemployment insurance for the first time. (Karen Lentz/MEDILL) Continuing claims in IL were up 2,282 for the week ended February 25 from the previous week, but down by 6,980 from a year ago. However, over the year, claims were down by 109, or 10.6 percent, from 1,026 in January 2016.

The rate rose as the number of jobs declined, while the number of new layoffs increased, according to the press release. According to GDOL, these are normal fluctuations for January.

From January 2016 to January2017, thirteen of the fifteen areas added jobs, with the largest percentage gains in the Barnstable, Boston-Cambridge-Newton, Lowell-Billerica-Chelmsford, New Bedford, and Haverhill-Newburyport-Amesbury areas. Job losses came in professional and business services, along with trade, transportation and warehousing. The layoffs were seen in the categories of manufacturing, administrative and support services, construction and trade, and transportation and warehousing.

The number of initial claims for unemployment insurance, a measure of new layoffs, rose by 152, or 45.1 percent, to 489. Most of the increase came in manufacturing. Over the year, claims were up by 154, or 15.1 percent, from 1,023 in January 2016. The number of unemployed residents rose by 472 to 9,475, while the number of employed residents increased by 828 to 173,354. Over the year, the number of people in the labor force increased by 575, as the number of employed grew by 548 and the number of unemployed increased by 27.

Metro Gainesville and the Georgia Mountains regions had the lowest area jobless rates in the state at 4.8 percent, while the Three River regions had the highest at 7.4 percent.

But the rise in unemployment was countered by a growth in establishment payroll jobs, the labor department's non-seasonally adjusted data indicated. Previously, the December rate was reported at 5.4 percent.
