Restaurants and retailers have also been warned against serving or selling these products. Any wholesaler or distributor that has any of the eight Vulto Creamery cheeses should contact Vulto Creamery to receive instructions on what to do with the cheese. The outbreak, which dates back to September, resulted in hospitalization in all six cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control. These symptoms normally appear a few days after people consumed a contaminated product. "Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths and fetal infection among pregnant women". Soft, raw-milk cheese created by Vulto Creamery in Walton, NY, has been recognized as the likely cause of the outbreak.
According to the CDC, outbreaks of listeria in the 1990s were primarily linked to deli meats and hot dogs. None of the cheeses now linked to the outbreak were sold at Whole Foods, and the grocery chain hasn't received any reports of illness from customers who purchased the raw cheese from its stores. Product photos of all Vulto Cheese products being recalled along with a brief description are attached. Older people and those with a weak immune system can die from listeria, especially if it is not caught in time.
Throughout February, nine other cheese companies recalled products sourced from Deutsch Kase Hause.
