Marine Photo Scandle Spreads to Other Branches

Posted March 11, 2017

The new groups and outlets for disseminating the photos appear to be an act of retaliation, with a few members mocking or egging on the investigators.

The scandal took a turn for the worse yesterday when it was discovered that the practice of sharing lewd photos extended far beyond one secret Facebook group.

"As reported by the Huffington Post, Anon-IB, which claims to have an entire static backup of the Anon-IB images, also has a readily found military naked photo category called "/mil/ - Military - Anon-IB" on their website.

Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Jennifer Johnson said the Army "is a values-based organization where everyone is expected to be treated with dignity and respect".

Business Insider reports that the originally reported group of almost 30,000 members - Marines United - was not the only outlet where military members solicited and shared nude and sexual images of their female colleagues without their consent.

Business Insider, an online news site, said the message board was threaded with conversations among men, many of whom asked for naked photographs of specific women, often identifying them by name and where they were stationed. Others then post photos. At the time, the Marine Corps did little to curb the behavior promoted on the site.

This message board was revealed days after the Marines United Facebook group was exposed.

"There is no place in our Marine Corps for bullying, predatory sharing of private and explicit photographs, making sexually violent and derogatory comments, or generally disrespecting a fellow Marine, regardless of gender, race, religion or creed", Neller wrote.

The Marine Corps is investigating, after nude photos of female members were reportedly distributed through social media.

House Democratic Women Are Staging a Walkout for 'Day Without a Woman '
Many prominent women's websites , including Bustle and The Cut , plan on not publishing any new content on Wednesday. Jocelyn Olcott is an associate professor of history and gender, sexuality and feminist studies at Duke University.

Other posts claim the behavior as circulating in Fort Bragg Air Force Base in North Carolina, Wright-Patterson in OH and Offutt in Nebraska.

"Maybe he would post some".

"Any wright patt wins? I'll start off with some".

He added, "over the past few years, the Defense Department has issued policy guidance to prevent and respond to sexual harassment and hazing, and we are now developing a comprehensive workplace harassment prevention and response policy that will reinforce the department's commitment to eradicate these type of problematic behaviors".

The question of the culture that motivated this alleged bad behavior has been the subject of much discussion.

Neller will brief the House Armed Services Committee next week on the Marines United scandal, congressional aides said.

He added that the inquiry by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is ongoing.

"I'm kind of concerned about skylining Mr. [Thomas] Brennan because he's been threatened, which I find as disgusting and as sick as any some of this other stuff, that somebody who tried to bring this to attention would be attacked by other Marines", Neller said.
