VX nerve agent used to kill Kim Jong Nam, police say

Posted February 25, 2017

Police said swabs were taken from Kim's eye and face by the chemistry department of Malaysia. One of the women was identified as Indonesian, the other had a Vietnamese passport.

USA and South Korean officials believe Mr Kim was killed by agents from the secretive state - and investigators in Malaysia have identified a total of eight North Korean suspects. Kim was preparing to board a flight from Kuala Lumpur to the Chinese territory of Macau, where he has been living. On Wednesday they also arrested 47-year-old Ri Jong Chol, a North Korean who had a Malaysian work visa for a small herbal medicine firm and lived in Kuala Lumpur with his wife and two children.

Malaysia said the attack was "planned" and that the women had been well trained.

On Monday, Malaysia announced that it had summoned the North Korean ambassador, Kang Chol, over his accusation that the government had something to hide and was in cohorts with Pyongyang's "enemies".

At the moment, there is a lot of suspicion that North Korea was responsible for the attack, however the country denies this.

The country says it wants to meet suspects, hear their statements, asked who ordered them, and survey footage from the place where Mr Kim fell ill.

The use of the highly toxic chemical prompted the authorities to plan a sweep of Malaysia's budget terminal KLIA2 and other locations for radioactive material, said Malaysia's police chief Khalid Abu Bakar.

"If the amount of the chemical brought in was small, it would be hard for us to detect", he said.

CCTV footage shows Kim Jong-nam was approached from behind by a woman who wiped her hands on his face on February 14 at the Kuala Lumpur airport.

Malaysian police earlier announced that the four had already arrived in Pyongyang, but it had remained unclear why they made such a long detour via the Middle East and Russian Federation.

In the security video, Kim appears unharmed immediately after the attack. "When an urgent opportunity arises, like this one on Kim Jong Nam, those people are tapped into operation, so they would be planted way beforehand".

What is VX nerve agent?

VX is a weapon of mass destruction, according to the United Nations. It is banned worldwide except for official research purposes.

"It's a very toxic nerve agent". A colorless, odorless liquid, similar in consistency to motor oil, it kills in tiny quantities that can be absorbed through the skin. An antidote can be administered by injection but it must be used quickly to be effective, according to the CDC.

"The North Korean ambassador has been less-than-diplomatic and the North Korean government are not seen to reprimand him just yet", Hamidi underlined in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
