When it comes to women, South Korea tops the list again with life expectancy is expected to break 90 years by 2030.

Aside from South Korea and Australia, the study suggests that Switzerland also has highly overlapping distributions of projected life expectancy for men.

The findings predict life expectancy is likely to be highest for women in South Korea at 90.8 years, France at 88.6 years, and Japan, at 88.4 years.

In Europe, French women and Swiss men rank first with averages of 88.6 years and almost 84 years. The researchers note that among rich countries, the US has the highest maternal and child death rates, homicide rate and is the only high-income country without comprehensive health care.

Humans in developed nations are living longer than ever before, with life expectancy in some countries soon expected to surpass 90 years, an worldwide team of researchers project. He said: "Men traditionally had unhealthier lifestyles, and so shorter life expectancies".

Women have a higher life expectancy than men. But they noted that the life expectancies described in the study are predictions, and that there is some uncertainty surrounding each prediction. In these industrialized, high-income countries, "except in periods of war, starvation and infection outbreaks, national life expectancy has increased steadily for decades".

Writing in a linked Comment, Dr Ailiana Santosa, Umeå University, Sweden, said: "Countries are moving towards universal health coverage". "Our predictions of increasing lifespans highlight our public health and healthcare successes". While some genetic factors might explain the longevity in certain countries, social and environmental factors were probably more important, Ezzati said.

He said that in the United States high homicide rates, obesity, inequality and the lack of universal healthcare are contributing to its stagnating life expectancy rates.

But life expectancy in the already lower than most other high-income countries and is expected to fall further behind in 2030, said study co-author James Bennett. Men born in 2010 can expect to live until they are just over 78 years old rising to 82-and-a-half years old for those born two decades later. The researchers only looked at data until 2013, so they didn't account for the downturn in life expectancy that happened in the U.S. in 2015 - the first such decline since the early 1990s.

The researchers used a statistical method based on 21 models for 35 countries with populations above 1 million, rather than a single statistical model.

Women in the United Kingdom can expect to live on average to 85 and men until they are 82 by 2030, according to a new analysis.

"In particular, we will need to both strengthen our health and social care systems and to establish alternative models of care such as technology-assisted home care", Ezzati said.

"We have a reasonable financial system to support older people, and this is one of the reasons the Government's been delaying the pension eligibility age and encouraging people to both stay at work for longer and to put money aside for their superannuation".
