Schumer Calls for Independent Investigation Following Flynn's Resignation

Posted February 16, 2017

Republican Senate Leaders welcomed the resignation of former national security advisor Michael Flynn, but Senate Minority Leader and his Democratic colleagues say the resignation does not go far enough.

Schumer cited a Department of Justice regulation that prohibits conflicts of interest in the conduct of investigations.

Was General Flynn directed or authorized to do what he did?

On Wednesday, for the second day in a row, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanded an investigation into Russian ties to Trump associates conducted by an "independent and unbiased law enforcement authority" that explicitly excludes Sessions.

Thompson on CNN Wednesday said that Sessions was a supporter of President Donald Trump during the presidential campaign, and he did not believe the former Alabama senator could remain impartial in an investigation of Trump or his administration. Why did they act only when they were caught misleading the media. Late Tuesday, The New York Times reported that us agencies had intercepted phone calls previous year between Russian intelligence officials and members of Trump's 2016 campaign team.

Debate over Sessions' role in forthcoming investigations was anticipated by Democratic senators during Sessions' confirmation last month, during which Senator Dianne Feinstein of California noted the close working relationship Sessions would have with Flynn upon his confirmation as Attorney General, and asked if he would recuse himself from an investigation. It brings up a lot of questions and those questions need to be answered. "There are lots of things that I assure you the intelligence committee members will be looking at and I think we'll be talking about later today and later this week", he said.

But Sessions has previously said he sees no need to recuse himself from any such investigations, and one of his advisers told the New York Times he has not been swayed from his position by recent events.

Schumer reiterated that the Intelligence committees will take the lead on an investigation and called on those panels to make the investigation's findings available to the public "to the maximum extent possible". We need a transparent investigation.

"Jeff Sessions can not be the person to lead that investigation".

Flynn's spokesperson told The Washington Post on Thursday that the retired lieutenant general does not recall discussing the possibility of lifting sanctions during the call but also said the prospect such conversation had occurred could not be ruled out. The American people deserve a full investigation.

Sessions indicated in his written responses to the Judiciary Committee that he may not be inclined to recuse himself from investigations involving Trump.
