Russian Planes Buzz by US Navy Destroyer

Posted Февраля 16, 2017

The US Defense Department had earlier claimed that several Russian jets buzzed a US Navy ship three times on February 10 - the last day of a ten-day maritime drill by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in the Black Sea near Russia.

There were three separate incidents involving Russian aircraft and the USS Porter, Captain Danny Hernandez, a spokesman for U.S. European Command, said.

Two of the incidents involved supersonic Su-24 attack jets, while the other flyby was allegedly made by an IL-38 maritime patrol aircraft.

The destroyer was part of the 10-day Romanian-led multinational Sea Shield 2017 exercise.

Also in the Black Sea, two Russian Fighters flew at a hazardous distance to a U.S. P-8A maritime patrol plane in September.

Konashenkov said all Russian "flights were conducted and are being conducted over the neutral waters of the Black Sea in accordance with worldwide rules and safety requirements".

"Several incidents by multiple Russian aircraft in the Black Sea near the destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) on February 10 were assessed by the ship's commanding officer as unsafe and unprofessional", Baldanza told Sputnik on Tuesday.

The USS Porter took part in Sea Shield, an annual worldwide military exercise, last week.

"These incidents are always concerning because they could result in miscalculation or accident", he said. Such incidents are considered as unsafe and unprofessional.

President Trump earlier this month said he respects Russian President Vladimir Putin and seemed to dismiss the former KGB officer's use of violence against political opponents.

Meanwhile, the USS Porter exited the Black Sea on February 13.

Russian planes buzzed a United States warship in the Black Sea as it was conducting North Atlantic Treaty Organisation exercises, American officials said.

Two Russian Sukhoi Su-24 attack aircraft fly over the USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) April 12, 2016.

The U.S. national security adviser, Michael Flynn, resigned abruptly after it emerged that he had been lying about his contacts with Russian officials.
